my birthday was a few weeks ago, and it was one of the best birthdays I’ve had in a long time. I’m pretty weird about my birthday – if left up to me I rarely do anything big, usually just dinner with my parents and one or two friends. when I was younger, my mom always had cool ideas and I always had cool birthday parties but as I got older and that planning fell on my shoulders my birthday celebrations got smaller and smaller. for example, last year I went to dinner with my parents and my then-boyfriend, then my boyfriend and I went to the movies. afterwards, I told him I loved him for the first time, and he didn’t say it back LMAO. so honestly I knew this year was going to be better than last year just by default.
but it was actually so wonderful! my mom had the great idea of attending a drag brunch (brunch where the entertainment is drag queens performing in case that wasn’t clear) and it was SO fun and SO funny.
none of us had ever been to a drag brunch before which I think added to the hilarity and grandeur of the entire experience. I smiled a lot and laughed a lot and had to twerk (this I failed at horribly) but overall I felt very happy, as I love these people with my whole heart. the show ended and when I came out of the bathroom my friends had decided to go to another bar (ngl, at this point I was ready to go home but I rallied). imagine my surprise when I arrived at the next bar to find my brother had planned a lil surprise get-together with my other friends who weren’t able to go to brunch (read: straight males)!!! it was literally the sweetest thing ever and melted my heart and also caused it to grow three sizes.
after copious amounts of day drinking, I was deposited back at my apartment with arms full of gifts and chick-fil-a (thank you Sarah for feeding me), where I then ate, showered, and promptly fell asleep for a few hours. I woke up around 8pm and then headed to a friend’s house where I was treated to boba tea and watched the classic 80s film Real Genius for the first time. all in all, a very good birthday indeed.
things I am grateful for: my beautiful, wonderful, gorgeous friends; my younger brother and his thoughtfulness; the energy and charisma of drag queens.
