The Bowl Game

12/19/22

I recognize that I am four posts behind schedule, but this weekend was nuts, starting on Friday. the university I work for made it to a bowl game, and our team played at 2pm on Friday. one of the other people who works in my office (same overall umbrella, different subset) came into my office and was like, “hey, we’re all going up to the fourth floor to watch the game, all are invited.”

I genuinely like sports – I may not be good at them, but I enjoy watching. so I grabbed my laptop and hiked up to the fourth floor to watch this game. our team played terribly but that’s not really the point of this story. my boss, who was working from home that day, called me into a teams meeting around 4pm. since I was upstairs I went into another office to take the call. immediately she was like “where are you?” and when I explained that I was upstairs she was like “….why? what are you doing? what’s going on?” and my stomach DROPPED. I really truly thought I was in trouble, that I should have asked permission to watch the bowl game, that I was going to get my ass chewed out in front of the other guy on the call with me. I was so scared.

but then like five minutes later in the call she was like “wait, you’re talking about football? is that what you mean?” she wasn’t mad, she straight up was so out of the loop and confused that she did not comprehend what I had been telling her LOL. the relief that washed over my body at that point was so great and wonderful, but also I am on high alert and getting all my shit done just in case – I feel like I dodged a bullet there, don’t want to push my luck.

things I am grateful for: college sports; Dr. Pepper; and the feeling of relief that comes after a misunderstanding is cleared up.
