I have always loved to read. I remember in elementary school I always earned enough points to go to the library pizza party that was hosted every year. one year I was sitting with my classmates (probably in 2nd grade at this point), when my kindergarten teacher walked by with her current class and told her students that I was “one of the best readers she’d ever had.” in 3rd grade my teacher had to force me to play during recess instead of read. I was in the school book club during middle and high school until the librarian, Mrs. G retired.
I have always found such comfort in reading. there are times where I will forego plans with others or things like watching TV if the book I’m reading is too good to put down. I think in another life I should have been a librarian or an author, but being an avid reader is enough for me in this life.
books have made me stop and catch my breath, have made me laugh out loud, have made me think about the way the world works and the way we function in it, have brought me to tears. I just think that’s incredible, that someone’s words can evoke that kind of emotion in a person. to travel to another world, full of rich characters and plots and problems – I feel sorry for people who don’t like to read.
to date, I have read 70 books this year. I’m hoping to get to 72 before the year ends (roughly six books a month), but we’ll see what happens. but to all my friends – if we ever make plans and I suddenly bail without explanation, now you know. too busy reading.
things I am grateful: libraries; my book of the month subscription; and friends who lend me their books.
